Officials say a driver has died after going around a barricade on a hurricane-damaged North Carolina highway that became a symbol of Helene’s destruction.

Hurricane Helene caused a flurry of flooding, which can trigger landslides. However, landslides aren’t covered by standard homeowners insurance or even flood insurance. And that can leave a lot of people in a terrible spot.

The highway has been shut down since Hurricane Helene's floodwaters swept away extensive sections along the Pigeon River.
