The wet weather will bring relief to Southern California after a prolonged period of dryness, but there’s concern that any bursts of heavy rainfall could cause flooding.

A flash-flood watch went into effect at 10 a.m. Sunday that includes fire-scarred areas of Souther California, with forecasters boosting their predictions for rainfall that carry the risk of significant flash flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch effective from 4 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Monday for areas in or near burn scars created by the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hughes Fire and Bridge Fire, the latter blaze of which burned 56,000 acres last fall.

Rain on its way to the Los Angeles area will be a welcome relief to firefighters still battling multiple catastrophic wildfires, but officials warned Sunday that flash floods and potential debris flows could be the trade-off.

A flood watch has been issued for parts of Southern California as rain and snow began to hit the region, prompting concerns over debris flow and mudslides. It will remain in effect until Monday afternoon.
