SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A blackout hit nearly all of Puerto Rico early Tuesday as the U.S. territory prepared to celebrate New Year’s, leaving more than 1.3 million clients in the dark. Officials said it could take up to two days to restore power.

An island-wide blackout in Puerto Rico Tuesday left more than 1 million residents without power ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations, with crews working for hours throughout the day to get the lights back on.

Power outages are a frustratingly frequent occurrence for many Puerto Ricans. A string of blackouts during the summer prompted protests and a state of emergency.

Most of Puerto Rico was hit by a major power outage on Tuesday and it could be until the early days of January before power is restored. Puerto Rico's power company said it began working to restore power to the island early in the morning.

A major power outage plunged much of Puerto Rico into darkness on New Year's Eve, with the US island territory's electric utility saying restoration could take up to two days.

Power was returned to more than three-quarters of Puerto Rico residents on Wednesday morning after a devastating blackout left nearly 80% of the Caribbean Island territory without electricity going into New Year's Eve.

Outages were still being reported on Thursday, following Tuesday's blackout that left 1.3 million people without power.
