Embiid is unquestionably worth every penny right now, but this is a big bet on him staying healthy the next five years.

The 7-foot-0, 280-pound, 30-year-old, 2023 NBA MVP, who recently won a gold medal with the 2024 U.S. Olympic team in Paris, France, on Friday signed a three-year, $193 million maximum contract extension to stay with the Philadelphia 76ers through the 2028-29 season.

Again, Embiid is arguably the best player in the NBA when healthy. But the problem is his health is always a question. He’s never played more than 68 games in a single season. Last year, he only played 39 total after tearing his meniscus before the All-Star break. That’s not ideal for a player a team will be investing more than $60 million into.
