At least nine workers are trapped inside a flooded coal mine in India’s northeastern Assam state, officials said Tuesday, as authorities summoned the army to help in the rescue operation. The miners became trapped on Monday morning in the Umrangso area in Dima Hasao district,

Three workers are confirmed dead in the Assam coal mine disaster. Efforts are on to rescue others trapped, with Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Navy divers involved in the operations.

Workers were inside the mine when water flooded it on Monday. T17 people have been rescued so far as per the reports. Nine people are still trapped inside the mine.

Workers said over a dozen miners had been trapped after water from a nearby unused mine began to pour into the mine, with some miners managing to escape.

The workers went down the mine at around 9am on Monday; and officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the flooding despite the absence of any rain in the region.
